and, in the event of my not being confirmed to that appointment, my travelling expenses to and from Hongkong.

On my arrival in this colony I was appointed acting attorney General in December 1846, and subsequently in the same month, acting Chief Justice in the room of the Honorable J. W. Hulme, Esquire, on his suspension from his office of Chief Justice. The Attorney General having returned to the colony and Mr. Hulme having been reinstated in his office, and both gentlemen having resumed the duties of their respective offices, the government will no longer have need of my services. I must therefore return to the place whence I came, namely, Calcutta.

My travelling expenses from Calcutta to this island and back, including the passage of my servant, and freight on my baggage and library will amount to the sum of ($1220.65) one thousand two hundred and twenty dollars and sixty-five cents. I submit that I am justly and reasonably entitled to that amount as an allowance for my travelling expenses to and from the colony. In support of my claim I beg to refer to the copies of the correspondence between my late uncle and Sir John Davis, late Governor of Hongkong, and to the Table of Charges of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company herewith enclosed.

I have, &c..
